It's usually a better idea to just upgrade to an entirely new CNC machine than updating the controller OS on an old one. That CNC controller runs XP, doesn't get updates or run AV, and is isolated from the rest of the network. I didn't argue with them why this shouldn't be happening, I removed the client. Nothing special, but sometimes remoting to it would cause the controller to freak out for no reason at all. I installed a very tiny VNC client on our first one. Our CNC company trusts me, so they let me play around a little, but I usually don't. It also helps they can tailor the hardware to be 'just right', so it doesn't cost them any more than it has to. No wasted effort trying to blame the end-user for what they might have done. If something goes wrong, they just re-flash it from a backup image or ship a new hard drive. So an embedded system is set up to 'just work'. They've told me some REAL horror stories about what 'qualified' IT personnel have ended up doing to their systems, convinced THEY were the ones doing it right. And the next week they call you with it running like garbage, missing files and full of malware? Even when they didn't have permissions on the machine? Yeah, your CNC maker sees US like those 'users', and rightly so, in a lot cases. You're familiar with 'users' aren't you? How you give them a nice, shiny new desktop/laptop, with an image or software load crafted with particular attention to detail, tuned like a fine racecar. Still fail to see the benefits of this embedded crap. Problem is the company that supplies the CNC systems charges the earth and a kidney as well. I will have to force the issue of trying to get these machine update to at least win 7. Oh great another wonderfull product by Microsoft.
